In addition to the new Replicator+ and Mini+, today MakerBot also unveiled its new Slate Gray Touch PLA Filament. What is MakerBot Slate Gray Tough PLA Filament?

This filament is similar to ABS in its tensile, impact, and flexural strength. It warps less than ABS and offers greater durability than PLA —meaning it can flex more than PLA before it breaks.

  • For example, it can be used to print jigs and fixtures with threaded and snap fits that can withstand repeated use. This is a great material option when you’re looking to create durable, high-impact strength prototypes and fixtures

    To print with the MakerBot Slate Gray Tough PLA Filament, you’ll need to use the MakerBot Tough PLA Smart Extruder+, which is included with the material bundle (details on that below).

The good news is this extruder is easily swappable so you can print with Tough PLA Filament and easily switch to the Smart Extruder+  for printing with MakerBot PLA Filament.

The new filament is compatible with the Replicator+, Replicator 5th Generation and Z18, however it is not compatible with the Replicator Mini or Replicator Mini+.

Here’s some cautionary advice to follow when using the new filament:

  • MakerBot Print software is required to print with Tough PLA and the Tough PLA Smart Extruder+
  • Printing regular MakerBot PLA through the Tough Smart Extruder+ voids this extruder’s warranty
  • Prior to printing, be sure your build plate is level, clean, and oil-free
  • As with other MakerBot material, store MakerBot Tough PLA Filament in a cool, dry place as it can absorb moisture from air and long-term exposure to humidity can compromise filament quality and performance.

Where Can I Buy the MakerBot Slate Gray Tough PLA Filament?

To print Tough PLA Filament, you must choose the bundle with the appropriate Tough PLA Smart Extruder+ for your printer.

Each bundle includes 3 spools of Tough PLA Filament and the Tough PLA Smart Extruder+.

There’s a Tough PLA Smart Extruder+ for the MakerBot Replicator+ and the MakerBot Replicator Desktop 3D Printer (5th Generation). There is also a Tough PLA Smart Extruder+ for the MakerBot Replicator Z18 3D Printer.
