CNC Machining Workshop: What You Missed

We recently teamed up with Piedmont Virginia Community College to host a CNC Machining workshop for local educators in the area.

With the help of instructors from EMCO and Siemens, we covered a great deal of material related to CNC machine tooling and software in just two days.

Day 1 was dedicated to CNC machining with EMCO CNC machines. EMCO offers a range of conventional lathes and milling machines, CNC turning centers, and vertical machining centers, but for this workshop in particular we had a turn lathe called the Concept Turn 60.

This is a great system for education environments because it offers interchangeable controls (we focused on FANUC), offers industrial performance at a reasonable size, and is safe for student learning.

Participants learned how to set up work shifts and tool offsets, created a tool library in the software, and wrote a G & M Code program in the software based on a 2D drawing they were given, just as one would do in industry. We later cut out our projects in aluminum.

Day 2 was dedicated to learning Siemens CNC programming, specifically SINUMERIK CNC ShopTurn and ShopMill software.

There are several ways schools can take advantage of the CNC resources Siemens has available, including eLearning curriculum, discounted curriculum materials for your lab, and discounted certifications for your students. You can find more information on these resources in Siemens’ SINUMERIK CNC4you portal.
